The story of the artwork

“Porte de Chefchaouen”

“Porte de Chefchaouen” pays tribute to the iconic doors of Chefchaouen, the famous blue city in northern Morocco. Inspired by the peaceful atmosphere of its lanes and the richness of its architectural heritage, this artwork celebrates a beauty where simplicity, light and tradition meet. The shades of blue, combined with the reliefs of the texture, evoke serenity, depth and the singular soul of the city.

With this composition, I am not only trying to depict a door, but to reveal what it stands for: a passage towards memory, inner journeys and contemplation. The textures, made entirely by hand, extend this feeling by giving the material an almost architectural presence, inviting everyone to build their own interpretation of the artwork.

Living with the artwork

In your home

At 70 × 50 cm (27.6 × 19.7 in), “Porte de Chefchaouen” sits naturally above a console table, in an entrance hall or at the end of a corridor, wherever a door draws the eye. Its blues bring calm to a bedroom or study and suit white walls as well as sand or terracotta tones.

The relief comes alive in light from the side: a window or a side lamp brings out every ridge of the surface. Hang the centre of the artwork about 145 cm (57 in) from the floor and allow roughly 1.5 m (5 ft) of distance to take it in whole. To try it at home, use “See it in your home” with your phone’s camera.

Questions about this artwork

Why are the doors of Chefchaouen blue?

Several explanations exist: a tradition attributed to Jewish families who found refuge in the town in the 20th century, the coolness blue is said to bring in summer, or simply the wish to keep an identity that became famous. The artwork does not choose: it keeps the serenity and silence of the lanes.
